Summary of Wasatch County GOP Central Committe Meeting

September 20, 2011, 7:00pm
Wasatch County Building

After the prayer and pledge, the county chair Aaron Gabrielson explained that beyond the tactics of winning elections, the purpose of the Republican party is to advance the ideals of individual liberty and limited government. Everything the party does should be a means to that end. He explained that it is important to remember that winning elections isn't the purpose, just the way we advance the principles of the party.

The meeting began with a video presentation from the Utah Republican Party in which the state party goals were outlined:

Elect Republicans to the four Utah Congressional seats
     Improve caucus attendance in 2012
Register 25% of Republicans to vote by mail
Register 55% of all voters as Republicans

We discussed the specific targets required of Wasatch county to do our part in hitting the state party goals.  The Precinct Chairs and Vice-Chairs will be the key to making it happen.

The reason why vote by mail is so important is because of the high percentage of ballots returned.  If 25% of Republicans had been registered to vote by mail, Rep. Jim Matheson would have lost the election in 2010. Vote by mail is the key to delivering victories in the important 2012 races. The county executive committee is working out the details on the vote by mail program. They will have details soon for the precinct chairs to take action on.

We discussed the locations for the March caucuses.  Each Precinct Chair should submit their proposed location for their caucus by November 1st.  All caucus locations should be in public places from now on.

The Wasatch County Lincoln Day Breakfast will be held on Saturday, February 11th at 8:30am - 10:00am at the Soldier Hollow Clubhouse.  Proposed ticket prices will be $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Both Bylaws and Platform committees need to be established.  The central committee needs to find three people to serve on each of these committees.  Anyone who would like to serve on these important committees should contact one of the county officers.

We are in the process of setting up a Young Republicans group. We are looking for a candidate to be the chapter president for Wasatch County.

City Council Candidate Forum Report

Cornerstone of Freedom sponsored a Heber City Council candidate forum on Thursday, August, 25th at the Senior Center.  The event was well attended. Of the ten candidates running for office, eight were able to participate that night.

Each candidate shared their background information and why they wanted to run for City Council.  All of the candidates were asked to give a response to questions asked by the audience. Most agreed that the economy and stimulating revenue for the City were top priorities.

When asked if they would raise taxes, all the candidates said that now was not the time to raise them.  Brian Berg, Jeff Bradshaw, Murl Rawlins, Dennis Robert all agreed that if needed they  would probably raise taxes when economic times were better.  Robert Patterson felt that taxes need to be raised now and explained his reasons.  David Remington, Erik Rowland, and Tracy Taylor felt that taxes should never be raised, but that revenue could be increased to meet the needs of the city.

One question that the candidates split their opinions on was whether or not councilman should be paid for sitting on other advisory boards.  Jeff Bradshaw, Murl Rawlins, Dennis Roberts were comfortable with compensation.  Robert Patterson didn't care one way or the other.  The rest of the candidates, Brian Berg,  David Remington, Erik Rowland, and Tracy Taylor felt there was no need to be compensated.   None felt that councilman should be department heads but that communication between the council and departments was important.

Another question that was important was should City Money be given or loaned to private entities.  Most thought it was in our interest to do so while others suggested that we look to the Tourism and Chamber of Commerce for monetary support in those private entities.

When asked what one thing, they would cut if elected, all but one answered the proposed addition of a financial officer, Tracy Taylor proposed to cut the $500,000 that has been set aside for a new city building.

Jerry Duke and Nile Horner were unable to attend.  Don't forget that early voting begins August 30th.  Six candidates will move through the primary.

Utah One Of Best Managed States In America

Barrons listed Utah as one of the best fiscally managed states in America.  The Republican principles of a free market and limited government work!

2012 Caucus Night Set for Thursday March 15, 2012

The state Republican caucus night is officially set for the evening of Thursday, March 15, 2012.  The night had to be moved from its usual day of Tuesday for a couple of reasons.  The election calendar has been compressed in order to comply with the Federal MOVE act which requires overseas military to get ballots 45 days before any election.  That meant changing the state filing dates and pushed our caucus date to Thursday in order for the filing deadline to close.  That way caucus attendees and delegates will know who is running.  We hope everyone brings their neighbors and fills the caucuses.  That night each neighborhood will vote for who will represent them at the State and County conventions.
