Republican For A Reason - Kim Powell

This is the first in a series of pieces written by Wasatch County residents answering the statement: "I'm Republican For A Reason"

I'm Republican For A Reason by Kim Powell

The very first college class I ever stepped foot in at the beginning of my freshman year was an introduction to political science class taught by Dan Jones.  Very early on in the semester, Mr. Jones admonished all of us to "get involved in a political campaign."  He said that he didn’t care which campaign, but to do some research and volunteer with a candidate's campaign whose views we could support.  I took his challenge and went to work researching various candidates and their political platforms.

My research that semester led me to volunteer on the campaign of a Republican candidate who was running for Utah governor.  I also attended my neighborhood caucus meeting and, at 18 years of age, was elected as a county and state delegate.

As I attended the conventions and learned more about the policies that the various candidates were pursuing, I discovered that my personal political sympathies lay solidly with the basics of the Republican party platform.  They have remained that way to this day.

First, I believe strongly in individual liberty and personal responsibility.  Each American citizen has an inalienable right to pursue his or her own success and prosperity, free from undue government interference.  This is only possible, however, when individuals pledge to lead virtuous and productive lives.

Second, I favor a constitutionally-limited government.  The solutions to our biggest problems rest with individuals and not with the state.  Government programs too often lead to dependency and inefficiency.  The free market and private sector are better-suited to address our needs.

Third, I am an ardent supporter of marriage and families.  I believe that society will stand or fall based on how people raise their children and treat their family members.  I respect the sanctity of human life and defend the rights of the unborn.

I believe the Republican Party should be welcoming to people from all walks of life who agree, as I do, with the central tenets of the Republican platform.  I earnestly hope to see many more Utahns become involved in the political process, and especially with the important work of the Utah Republican Party.
